Job Summary
We are looking for a Behaviour Support Practitioner to work within the Lewisham Intensive Support Team, which is part of the Mental Health & Learning Disabilities Service (MHLD). You will work directly and indirectly with people with learning disabilities, families, and carers, providing person-centred specialist behavioural assessments and interventions using a Positive Behavioural Support approach. The goal is to reduce hospital admissions and out-of-area placements, ensuring care is person-centred and delivered in the least restrictive environments.
Main Duties of the Job
- Provide applied behavioural assessment and intervention for clients at risk of hospital admission or placement breakdown due to challenging behaviours.
- Employ Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) principles in all clinical work.
- Participate in strengthening local services and developing capable environments through training, consultation, and modelling.
- Contribute to enabling staff, service users, and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish.
- Provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate.
- Participate in service evaluation, audit, and research.
- Work as an autonomous professional within Trust guidelines and codes of conduct.
- Plan and facilitate staff training, teaching, and presentations.

As a Behaviour Support Practitioner in our team, you will be part of a well-established group of around 20 Psychologists and Behavioural Support Practitioners working across MHLD services led by Consultant Clinical Psychologists. The trust provides a range of psychological assessments and interventions for people with learning disabilities. You will receive supervision from a qualified psychologist and have opportunities to work jointly with psychologists and colleagues. Regular CPD sessions and teaching/training initiatives are available. We have close links with the Estia Centre and are part of a Clinical Academic Group within Kings Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. Opportunities to help develop and deliver training and consultation to provider services and mainstream mental health colleagues are encouraged.
Person Specification
Experience/Knowledge (Essential)
- Experience and knowledge of applied behavioural assessment and treatment of clients with complex needs.
- Experience supporting diversity within local communities (gained through work, research, volunteering, or lived experience).
- Experience and knowledge of Positive Behavioural Support practice.
Experience/Knowledge (Desirable)
- Lived experience of mental health or learning disabilities challenges.
Qualifications (Essential)
- Bachelor's Degree followed by PG Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis, or Analysis.
Abilities (Essential)
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations (e.g., working with victims of abuse/trauma, or individuals who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour).
- Ability to manage verbal and physical aggression directed at self, including de-escalation techniques and personal safety procedures.
Skills (Essential)
- To deliver Applied Behaviour Analysis and Positive Behavioural Support across cultural and other differences.
- To communicate complex and sensitive information with clients, carers, and colleagues, overcoming barriers to communication.
- To select and administer specialist assessment procedures, interpreting and integrating complex data from several sources.
Skills (Desirable)
- Skills in providing teaching and training to other professional groups.
