Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to gain experience in Intensive Care Medicine in the setting of a large London teaching hospital. The Critical Care department at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] has an international reputation for clinical excellence and a prominent research profile. As well as serving the local population we provide tertiary critical care to the region.

The posts are at CT1/2 level and airway skills are not specifically required. These posts would be ideal for any candidate wishing to extend their experience in intensive care medicine before applying for anaesthesia, medicine or surgical training.

Main Duties of the Job

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] to include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
  • Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

Clinical Fellows are required to provide direct clinical care in all of the Critical Care areas in the trust as, namely:

  • East Wing 1, 2 and 6 Intensive Care Units
  • Guy's Critical Care Unit
  • East Wing 10 High Dependency Unit
  • Lane Fox Respiratory Unit
  • Doulton High Dependency unit

About Us

The Critical Care department at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] has an international reputation for clinical excellence and a prominent research profile. As well as serving the local population we provide tertiary critical care to the region. The units are equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring, point of care testing and a computer information system for charting, note-keeping and prescribing. All modalities of organ support are available.

The critical care department comprises seven clinical areas and totals 85 beds across the St Thomas' and Guy's sites. There are 41 level 3 beds in the East Wing of the hospital (15 on EW1 ICU, 15 on EW2 ICU and 11 on EW6 ICU), an overnight intensive recovery unit (11 level 3 beds staffed by anaesthetists), a medical/surgical HDU on East Wing level 10 (15 level 2 beds) and cardiovascular surgical HDU (5 level 2 beds) on East Wing level 8. At the Guy's site, there are 13 level 2/3 beds on the Guys Critical Care Unit (GCCU).

Person Specification

Qualifications/Education

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable:

  • MRCP part 1 or equivalent
  • Higher degree (MD or equivalent)

Professional/Statutory Registration

Essential:

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Previous Experience

Essential:

  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • Applicants should have sufficient registration experience in the UK by the start of the job

Desirable:

  • Experience of anaesthesia
  • Experience of intensive care medicine
  • Experience of acute medicine

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential:

  • Valid adult life support (ALS) certification

Desirable:

  • Experience of central line or vascath insertion
  • Experience of arterial line insertion
  • Experience of intubation
