Job Summary
A vacancy has arisen for a Trust Doctor (ST1 equivalent) in Paediatrics. This is a full time/part time role including participation in a full shift rota system. The role includes day to day care of patients in all Paediatric areas include Acute Inpatient General Paediatric Ward, Children's and Young Persons Day Unit, level 1 Neonatal Unit, Postnatal Ward, Paediatric Outpatient Clinic and Delivery Suite. This provides the ideal grounding in Paediatrics for those considering future applications for Paediatric specialty training or other specialty training programmes where a significant proportion of their patient group is comprised of children, e.g. primary care of other Paediatric subspecialties.
Main Duties of the Job
- Care of General Paediatric and Neonatal patients under consultant and middle grade supervision.
- Attendance at Paediatric and Neonatal emergencies as required.
- Care of Paediatric outpatients under consultant and middle grade supervision.
- Care of child assessment unit and rapid referral patients.
- To engage in Continuing Professional Development and audit as appropriate.
- To engage with the Trust's appraisal and revalidation process.
- The post holder is expected to attend specialist clinics for educational purposes and to develop their own individual specialist skills.
- There is a strong emphasis on training and teaching.

Job Responsibilities
There is a strong emphasis in the department on training, and the post-holder will be expected to develop skills in teaching through participation in the educational programme. There are also opportunities to become involved in the locally run Paediatric Life Support Training Days and other activities. So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of duties the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior.
Person Specification
Experience/ Qualifications
- Essential: Basic medical degree, Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice, Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
- Desirable: Higher Degree, Distinctions, Scholarships prizes, other degrees eg BSc, MSc, PhD, Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
Clinical Skills and Experience
- Essential: Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems, ability to maximise safety and minimise risk, an ability to communicate well with patients and staff.
- Desirable: Experience in other related specialties.
Knowledge
- Desirable: Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
Organisation and Planning
- Essential: Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams, understanding of NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
- Desirable: Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended.
Teaching Skills
- Essential: Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
- Desirable: Recognised teaching qualification.
Academic and Research
- Essential: Evidence of participation in audit.
- Desirable: Research experience, Publications, Prizes and honours.
Career Progression
- Essential: Appropriate progression of career to date.
Personal Attributes
- Essential: Evidence of good communication skills both oral and written.
