Pharmacy Technician - Maternity Cover

Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated and detail-focused Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and forward-thinking GP practice on a 12-month maternity cover basis starting in mid-July 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in patient care, supporting safe prescribing and medicines optimisation within a collaborative primary care team.

You will work closely with GPs, pharmacists and our wider multidisciplinary team, contributing to high-quality care in a supportive and innovative environment.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Review and process clinical correspondence, ensuring medication changes are accurately reflected in patient records.
  • Support prescription processing, handle medication queries from patients and pharmacies.
  • Assist with medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge.
  • Contribute to medication safety work, including responding to drug alerts and supporting prescribing audits.
  • Maintain high standards of prescribing practice and accurate record-keeping using clinical systems.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Correspondence & Medication Management

  • Review incoming clinical correspondence (e.g. discharge summaries, clinic letters)
  • Interpret and implement medication changes accurately on the clinical system
  • Update repeat and acute medications (start, stop, amend)
  • Identify discrepancies and escalate to GP or pharmacist where required
  • Ensure all actions are completed safely and in a timely manner
  • Code relevant clinical information appropriately

Medicines Reconciliation

  • Undertake medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge or care transitions
  • Ensure GP records align with secondary care recommendations
  • Liaise with hospitals, community pharmacies, and care homes to resolve discrepancies

Prescription Processing

  • Process repeat and acute prescription requests accurately
  • Manage medication-related queries from patients, pharmacies, and healthcare professionals
  • Ensure prescriptions meet legal and safety requirements

Medicines Optimisation & Safety

  • Support medication reviews and prescribing audits
  • Monitor high-risk medications (e.g. anticoagulants, methotrexate)
  • Action national safety alerts (e.g. MHRA/NHS alerts, drug recalls)
  • Support safe prescribing initiatives and adherence to local formularies

Patient & Team Support

  • Respond to medication queries from patients within scope of practice
  • Support patient understanding and adherence to medication
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, pharmacists, nurses, and admin teams

Administrative & IT Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medication records on clinical systems (e.g. EMIS)
  • Run searches and reports for audits and quality improvement
  • Ensure compliance with data protection and confidentiality requirements

General Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a culture of teamwork, quality improvement, and patient safety
  • Adhere to practice policies, governance, and professional standards
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold information governance requirements
  • Participate in training, development, and practice meetings

Person Specification

Experience

Essential: Experience handling clinical correspondence and medication changes OR a strong medicines management background.

Desirable: Experience working in General Practice or a Primary Care Network; experience with medicines reconciliation and discharge processing; understanding of NHS prescribing systems and local formularies.

Qualifications

Essential: Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC); GCSE Mathematics & English (Grade C/4 or above), or equivalent.

Personal Qualities

Essential: Polite and confident, flexible and cooperative, motivated, forward-thinking, high levels of integrity and loyalty, sensitive and empathetic, ability to work under pressure.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential: High level of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to interpret clinical information and escalate when appropriate, competent in Microsoft Office and Outlook, effective time management, strong planning and organising ability, excellent communication skills.

Desirable: EMIS (or similar clinical system) skills.
