Biomedical Support Worker
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is hiring a Biomedical Support Worker based at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary of £25,272 per annum. Closing date: 10 May 2026.
Job summary
We are looking to recruit motivated, caring and compassionate individuals for the role of Biomedical Support Worker. Candidates must have a genuine interest in science and possess a scientific qualification plus a Mathematics and English qualification equivalent to GCSE A*-E and have previous laboratory or healthcare experience and be an excellent team player.
Main duties of the job
The main duties will include the receipt and pre-analytical processing of patient samples; inputting patient and specimen details into the laboratory computer system; loading automated analysers, basic trouble shooting; dealing with telephone enquiries regarding results of laboratory investigations and general housekeeping duties. The work can sometimes be quite physically demanding. Successful candidates must have good keyboard, communication and organisational skills, together with an excellent work ethic.

Job responsibilities
- To take receipt of and sort clinical samples received from wards, clinics and general practice.
- To check the integrity of samples and prioritise urgent and unstable samples.
- To unpack samples with reference to Health and Safety procedures.
- To label samples with laboratory numbers and input patient and sample information into the laboratory computer system.
- To solve day to day problems with samples such as unlabelled and leaking specimens.
- To undertake pre-analytical processing of clinical samples and blood, with reference to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
- To understand where different pathology tests are performed and direct samples to appropriate departments.
- To perform and document daily quality checks on equipment.
- To answer telephone enquiries and give out results in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- To maintain adequate levels of laboratory consumables.
- To dispose of clinical waste safely in accordance with Health and Safety procedures.
- To maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- To be aware of inherent hazards and report any risks or accidents.
Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
Essential: GCSE (or equivalent) grades A*-E in Maths, English and a science. Commitment to CPD. Willingness to attend relevant courses.
Desirable: NVQ Level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support or Healthcare.
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
Essential: Previous Laboratory/Healthcare experience. Experience of working as part of a team. Experience of working with public or customer care. Awareness of the role of a Medical Laboratory. Awareness of Health and Safety. Understanding of confidentiality within the NHS. Ability to handle blood and other bodily fluid samples.
Desirable: Experience of laboratory techniques.
Communication and Relationships
Essential: Ability to work with minimal supervision and use initiative. Accuracy and attention to detail under pressure. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Positive attitude, willing to learn, co-operative, reliable. Manual dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination. Ability to manage and prioritise self. Flexible attitude to working hours.
