Trust Fellow within Critical Care
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking a Trust Fellow within Critical Care to support the running of both Critical Care units at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. This fixed-term, full-time post offers a salary of £65,048 to £73,992 per annum (per annum). Closing date: 12 May 2026.
Job summary
This role will support the running of both Critical Care units in Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. The post will also support the provision of on call services across both sites. This role will complement our current junior and middle grade rotas to continue to provide the high level of care for which our units are proud to deliver. Roles will include the review and management of patients on the Critical Care unit along with review of patients referred to Critical Care. You will be an integral member of the Adult and Paediatric Cardiac arrest teams as well as the Trauma team. You will be expected to delivery all procedures required for the management of current inpatients and stabilisation of new admission with the exception of percutaneous tracheostomies. It is vital that you are able to work within the flat hierarchy we maintain and work with all members of the MDT. It is hoped that you will also look to support the educational and research programme of the department and you will be supported in these roles.
Main duties of the job
- Minimum 12 months anaesthetic experience and ability to provide advanced airway maneuvers independently with only remote support available.
- Proficient at inserting central venous access including dialysis lines.
- Completed a minimum of 12 months of resident Intensive cover.
- Up-to-date life support courses.
- Desirable: postgraduate anesthesia or Intensive care medical qualifications (FRCA Part 1 or higher, FFICM, EDIC etc).

Job responsibilities
Critical Care Services lead by Clinical Lead, Simon Webster. The Critical Care service comprises of 23 other Consultants: Our Critical Care services are delivered across two unit, one on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site and one on the Cheltenham General site. The two units admit approximately 1,500 patients a year. We support elective surgical services including Upper GI resection work, head and neck cancer services, three counties Gynae-Oncology services, a busy vascular unit. We have a busy medical admissions workload supporting all specialties including interventional cardiology, haematology, oncology, respiratory and renal medicine. We have the greatest number of paediatric admissions outside of PICU in the South West with between 40 and 50 admissions per year. We pride ourselves on our MDT approach to patient care and the flat hierarchy within our units. We have the support of an excellent outreach team across both our sites and we work closely together to ensure the best patient care. - Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities: Provide care to Critical Care patients; Reviewing Critical Care referrals from throughout the hospital; Support the provision of an on-call rota in a 1:8 frequency; Support the MDT on Critical Care; Participate in shared decision making for ongoing management of Critical Care patient.
- Professional Development, Education and Training: Support the departmental educational program; Attendance at teaching when available: Radiology teaching every Tuesday, Education session every Friday, Departmental M & M alternate months.
- Management and Leadership: Show strong and clear leadership, especially when forming part of the out of hours Critical Care team to both the unit and Cardiac arrest teams.
- Research and Development: Support recruitment into ongoing research projects; Welcome to undertake role as Associate PI.
- Communications and Working Relationships: High quality, clear and comprehensive communication; Regularly communicate with patients and involve them in shared decision making; Communicate with relatives and next of kin in a professional and kind manner; Communicate effectively with all members of the MDT and other specialties.
- Clinical Governance: Robust Clinical governance processes with monthly CG meeting and two monthly mortality and morbidity review.
Person Specification
Qualifications / training
- Essential: Full GMC registration; Primary FRCA
- Desirable: ALS / APLS / PLS
Knowledge and skills
- Essential: Ability to maintain a patients' airway independently 'out of hours'; Independently site central venous access
- Desirable: Teaching experience
Clinical experience
- Essential: Previous critical care experience; Minimum 12 months anaesthetic experience and completion of IAC; Ability to work closely with Critical Care MDT
Personal attributes
- Essential: Flexibility and willingness to work together with colleagues to support on-call commitments; Excellent interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues; Able to work co-operatively as a team member
