Job summary

Working at a busy rural practice we have a vacancy for a Dispenser. You will work as part of a team to provide a caring, courteous and effective dispensing service to patients and other service users. Main duties of the job

  • Assist in preparation, dispensing and sale of prescriptions and assist with stock control, ordering and re-stocking of the dispensary.
  • Work with the Dispensary Manager to ensure smooth running of the dispensary and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure the formulary is adhered to and support the Dispensary Manager in implementing change.
  • Train and support colleagues to maintain high standards of care.
  • Accurate and secure dispensing of medicines, ensuring zero discrepancies.
  • Manage stock levels in the dispensary.
  • Cover for colleagues during annual leave or illness.

Job responsibilities

  • Using the clinical system to ensure all relevant information is recorded onto individual patient records as required
  • Following Standard Operating Procedures to receive requests for and accurately process/dispense all prescriptions
  • Following Standard Operating Procedures to safely and accurately assemble medication
  • Be responsible for the correct management, safe issuing and recording of controlled drugs
  • Collection of prescription charges/checking patient exemption statements and accurate recording and safe keeping
  • Liaising with doctors, hospitals and other health professionals as needed
  • Using the clinical system to maintain adequate stock levels, ordering stock, and receiving stock
  • Request stock as required using the clinical system ensuring only minimum stock is maintained to run dispensary efficiently and safely
  • Manage receipt of stock, checking delivery notes and ensuring that the clinical system is updated to maintain accurate electronic stock control
  • Liaise with pharmaceutical wholesalers / companies as required
  • Ensure the clinical team are aware of out of stock items / stock shortages in a timely manner and running reports on the clinical system as needed
  • Follow-up any delivery discrepancies as appropriate
  • Dispose of out of date medication correctly updating stock as required
  • Checking, counting and filing of prescriptions
  • Sharing responsibility for maintaining dispensary equipment in a clean and tidy condition, this to include adhering to our Dispensary Housekeeping Protocol.

Person Specification - Qualifications

Essential: NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills / Pharmacy Services Assistant

Person Specification - Experience

Essential:

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical regulations and safety protocols
  • Excellent IT skills in outlook, word and excel
  • Experience of working in a customer facing environment and have a patient focused approach
  • Good communication skills, able to communicate effectively for different needs
  • Able to work accurately and systematically, ensuring high-quality output
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work well within a team
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced environment
  • Flexibility to support team members when necessary

Desirable: Experience of working in general practice and an understanding of administration activities, particularly processing prescriptions.
