Job summary

The Childrens Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) plays a key role in delivering early intervention, person-centred support to children, young people, and families across Swindon. Working as part of a multidisciplinary mental health service, you will provide evidence-based support for mild to moderate mental health difficulties through assessments, low-intensity interventions, and practical coping strategies. The role also involves working closely with families, schools, and partner agencies to ensure care is holistic, accessible, and responsive, while contributing to the ongoing development of the service.

Main duties of the job

This is a rewarding role focused on delivering evidence-based, low-intensity interventions to children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, and behavioural challenges. Key responsibilities include conducting initial assessments, identifying needs, and developing collaborative treatment plans tailored to each young person and their family. You will deliver one-to-one and group interventions through face-to-face and blended approaches, with responsibility for leading parenting interventions such as the evidence-based Triple P Parenting Programme. The role also involves monitoring progress and outcomes through routine measures, contributing to improvements in local access metrics for children and young people, and responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns by providing immediate support where needed. You will be expected to remain up to date with developments in child and adolescent mental health through ongoing training and professional development, while participating in regular supervision and peer support sessions to maintain best practice and continuous growth. In addition, you will undertake any other duties appropriate to the role to support service development and ensure high-quality care for children and young people.

Job responsibilities

The Childrens Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) will play a pivotal role in delivering responsive early intervention, person-centred care to children, young people and families across Swindon.

The Childrens Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) provides brief, evidence-based, and outcome-focused psychological interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary Childrens and Young Peoples Mental Health Service, you will conduct assessments, deliver low-intensity interventions, and support children, young people, and their families to develop practical coping skills.

The role includes close collaboration with families, schools, and other professionals to ensure care is holistic, accessible, and responsive. You will work within professional and ethical guidelines, engage in regular clinical supervision, and contribute to the ongoing development of the service.

  • Deliver evidence-based low-intensity interventions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties (e.g., anxiety, low mood, behavioural challenges).
  • Conduct initial assessments, formulate needs, and develop collaborative treatment plans.
  • Provide one-to-one and group interventions, face-to-face and/or through blended modalities, involving families where appropriate.
  • Responsible for leading Parenting Interventions (Evidence based Triple P Parenting course)
  • Monitor outcomes and progress, using routine outcome measures to inform ongoing support.
  • Monitor and contribute to improving local access metrics for children and young people.
  • Respond to identified safeguarding concerns, providing immediate support and intervention to children and families in need.
  • Stay current with developments in child and adolescent mental health, attending training sessions, workshops, and conferences as needed.
  • Participate in regular supervision and peer support meetings to ensure best practices and continuous professional growth.
  • Any other duties appropriate to role to support the development of the service offer and quality of care received by CYP.

Skills & Competencies required

  • Experience in delivering phone-based assessments or support within a health, education or social care context.
  • Knowledge of emotional wellbeing needs in children and young people.
  • Strong understanding of the local support landscape or willingness to rapidly develop this knowledge.
  • Ability to listen actively and communicate effectively, showing empathy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to assess levels of need, manage risk, and provide appropriate signposting or escalation.
  • Strong documentation and record-keeping skills, ensuring accurate, evidence-based case notes.
  • Proficiency with digital systems, including client management systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity to the diverse needs of the community.
  • Confidence to work independently while contributing to a wider multi-disciplinary team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified Children's Wellbeing Practitioner Accredited with professional body (BABCP or BPS)

Desirable

  • Relevant qualification NVQ / Uni Qualification.
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent.
  • Evidence of post registration training.
  • Evidence based Triple P Parenting course training can be offered

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of development in MH CYP, family development and of transitions.
  • Able to demonstrate clinical outcomes and meeting agreed performance targets.
  • Ability to manage own caseload and time
  • Experience of working in an enhanced need MH multi- disciplinary team environment and with external professionals such as emergency services.
  • Ability to work independently to assess and manage risks inc Ability to recognise and respond to concerns about child protection and safeguarding.

Desirable

  • Experience in quality improvement measures.
  • Experience using IAPTus
