The Role
Lead an engineering team to deliver high-quality software predictably and sustainably. Provide day-to-day technical and people leadership, with direct visibility into individual performance, team health, and delivery flow. Champion modern engineering practices such as continuous delivery, test automation, observability, and improved development flow to drive sustainable change that strengthens quality, pace, and long-term engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Health: Accountable for ensuring the pod performs effectively and consistently delivers on its commitments. Set clear goals, standards, and working agreements; foster a culture of ownership, psychological safety, and continuous improvement. Act as a visible role model for engineering excellence. Ensure effective core rituals. Monitor team capacity and remove blockers. Coach engineers on craft excellence.
- People Management & Performance: Provide regular 1:1s, feedback, career development plans, and growth opportunities. Own performance management end to end. Hire and onboard engineers; build a diverse, inclusive team. Maintain direct line of sight into daily contributions.
- Delivery & Execution: Own delivery commitments at the team level, ensuring alignment with roadmap and OKRs. Partner with stakeholders to provide accurate updates. Collaborate to identify and manage dependencies, risks, and escalations. Track and improve team flow metrics. Champion automation in CI/CD, test coverage, and release governance.
- Technical Stewardship: Collaborate with Senior Engineer(s)/Architect(s) on system design, technical strategy, and debt retirement. Encourage high standards in code review, documentation, security posture, and observability. Balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders on prioritisation, scope, and trade-offs; align delivery to business outcomes. Communicate plans, risks, and status clearly.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams as EM/SDM (typically 3–5+ years).
- Background as a senior engineer or equivalent; capable of technical guidance without being the primary coder.
- Experience with agile delivery at scale, production operations, and modern DevOps practices.
- Strong track record in hiring, performance management, and coaching.
