If you love a challenge and want to be part of something big, [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is the place to be.
We're looking for an experienced Fibre Optic Engineer to join our growing team. If you take pride in high‑quality engineering, enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and want to play a key role in building and maintaining the UK's fibre networks, this could be the perfect fit.
In this role, you'll be hands-on with the construction, activation, and maintenance of fibre networks—working across both new-build and live environments. You'll be responsible for splicing, testing, commissioning, and fault resolution, ensuring every connection meets the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability.
What You'll Be Doing
Fibre Installation
- Installing, terminating, and testing fibre cables (2–432 core SM).
- Fusion splicing using Fujikura or similar equipment.
- Building and installing ODFs, joints, cabinets, and other enclosures.
- Creating new splice points and carrying out live network splicing and repairs.
- Working across underground, overhead, and internal environments (data rooms, comms cabinets).
- Ensuring all routing, coiling, and labelling meets client and industry standards.
Testing, Commissioning & Fault Resolution
- Carrying out OTDR, ILM, CD, PMD, IOLM and PON testing.
- Analysing traces and test results to identify and resolve issues.
- Producing clear, accurate test reports and as-built documentation.
- Supporting the commissioning and handover of new fibre links.
Network Maintenance
- Performing proactive and reactive maintenance on live and new-build networks.
- Diagnosing and repairing faults to minimise downtime.
- Replacing components and ensuring long-term network reliability.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Working safely at height, in confined spaces, and across varied environments.
- Completing risk assessments, vehicle checks, and tool inspections.
- Maintaining PPE and equipment to a high standard.
- Participating in the Emergency Response Support rota when required.
Site Operations & Quality
- Managing tools, materials, and equipment effectively.
- Interpreting technical diagrams, SLDs, schematics, and job packs.
- Keeping documentation up to date, including splice schedules, redlines, and test results.
- Reporting progress and issues through digital systems.
- Capturing accurate site evidence (photos, measurements, as-builts).
Relationship Management
- Communicating professionally with clients, end users, and the public.
- Providing clear updates on planned works and progress.
- Representing the company with professionalism and a positive attitude.
Requirements
- Strong technical skills in fibre splicing, testing, and diagnostics.
- Confident using OTDR and power meter equipment (EXFO, Anritsu, Nettest, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret network diagrams and documentation.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Competent with IT systems, mobile apps, and digital reporting tools.
- Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Experience We're Looking For
- At least 2 years’ experience in fibre splicing and testing.
- Experience working on both live and new-build networks.
- Understanding of FTTP/FTTH/PON/GPON architectures.
- Familiarity with NRSWA requirements and client operating procedures.
