Bank Respite Nurse

Based at Kites Corner in Gloucester or within family homes across Gloucestershire, this role involves providing specialist nursing respite care for children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. The position offers flexible, bank-based hours and requires a proactive, compassionate nurse committed to family-centred care.

Position Summary

As a proactive member of the Nursing Team, you will assist in creating a caring, supportive and safe environment for children. [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] offers family-centred care; you will work in partnership with children and their families eligible to use the Trust's services. Self-motivated and capable of working independently or as a team player, you will support senior nurses with assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. In the absence of a senior nurse, you may manage and coordinate care at Kites Corner during your shift. Regular reflection on practice through audits and supervisions ensures outstanding and safe care, demonstrating compliance with CQC and Ofsted regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Actively encourage a family atmosphere within Kites Corner.
  • Contribute positively to a child and family-focused environment, whether at Kites Corner or in the family home.
  • Recognise family skills and experience, working in partnership to plan holistic care.
  • Use a systematic, individualised approach to plan care consistent with other providers.
  • Assess, maintain and evaluate agreed standards of care with family carers and the child.
  • Ensure safe, accurate administration, recording and storage of medication.
  • Provide total care during the agreed respite period.
  • Identify and follow the child's care routine, negotiating changes with child and family.
  • Attend multi-professional meetings as agreed by Nursing Management and liaise with other professionals.
  • Maintain regular contact with Nursing Management regarding changes in family circumstances.
  • Inform relevant professionals of changes to the child's care/management.
  • Facilitate outings, play and activity appropriate to the child's development.
  • Use evidence to underpin practice, adhering to [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] policies.
  • Report safeguarding concerns to the appropriate manager.
  • Maintain confidential, accurate and timely records.
  • Ensure cultural needs of children and families are met.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, privacy and dignity.

Professional Development

  • Work within professional competence and NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Take advantage of training opportunities, including mandatory sessions.
  • Maintain NMC registration.
  • Keep a Personal Professional Profile and update mandatory training.
  • Maintain knowledge of quality palliative care at Kites Corner or family home.
  • Maintain awareness of care for children with complex needs (LTV, TPN, Tracheotomies, Central Lines).
  • Attend performance reviews and clinical supervisions.

Clinical Governance and Quality

  • Participate in quality control monitoring and auditing.
  • Proactively identify ways of improving practice.
  • Contribute to development and audit of standards.
  • Use reflective practice through clinical supervision for continuous improvement.
  • Complete clinical incident documentation in line with no-blame and whistle-blowing policies.

  • Complete risk assessments as requested.

Management and Team Awareness

  • Ensure good teamwork and flexible approach.
  • Act as Nurse-in-Charge at Kites Corner as required.
  • Guide and supervise volunteers.
  • Liaise with Administration Supervisor for ordering and purchasing.
  • Inform line manager of incidents and concerns.
  • Participate in induction of new staff.
  • Mentor students on placement.
  • Carry out reasonable additional duties as agreed.

Communication
