Job Description

Your role: The Deputy Editor works closely with the editor and the news editor to deliver a distinctive, agenda-setting news package across all platforms for [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] in Scotland.
Day to day you will:
- Successfully manage a productive relationship with the editor, the news editor and with journalists in London and Glasgow.
- Work with editors, writers and reporters to conceive, commission and edit distinctive agenda-setting stories for a digital and print audience.
- Help to create the newslist and manage the development of stories.
- Commission exclusive video, polls, interactive graphics and picture galleries.
- Use SEO, Inca, Pars.ly and Google Trends to help guide commissioning.
- Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and promotion.
- Forward-plan, working with journalists on long-range projects and investigations.
- Help to lead and manage the newsroom, develop talent and support progression.
- Assist the Scottish editor with managing the budget.
What we’re looking for from you:
- Experience working as a senior editor for a national newspaper.
- Demonstrable expertise in Scottish current affairs and politics.
- Understanding of how audience data supports commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines.
- Knows how to attract and retain new digital audiences.
- Ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy.
- Ability to communicate succinctly and effectively.
- Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Persuasive presentation skills and well-developed interpersonal skills.
- Strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues.
