Brief Description

Manufacturing Technician apprentice, working in an interesting, fast moving manufacturing environment, if this is for you read on. The Manufacturing technician is responsible for ensuring that components can be manufactured and assembled into quality products, achieving the team goals.

Qualifications Required

  • 5 GCSE’s at grades A* to C / 4 to 9 or equivalent, including maths, English language and a science are preferred.

Personal Qualities

  • Work methodically and pay close attention to detail.
  • Self motivated.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Good level of English.
  • Desire to do your best work at all times.
  • Excellent time and attendance are mandatory.
  • Organised.

Skills Required

  • Good problem solving skills.
  • A good interest in engineering and previous experience desirable, but not essential as all training is provided.
  • Able to develop good working relationships with a variety of colleagues.

Training to be Provided

This 4 year programme will include:

  • Engineering Basic Skills training – off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham
  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering
  • A Technical Certificate (BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Engineering)
  • In house training in line with your requirements.

The [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] group is a family owned business currently entering the 7th generation, the site in Wednesbury is part of the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] locking systems group. The company was founded in Willenhall, West midlands and has manufactured locks since 1889. The locking systems division has operational sites in Wednesbury UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and the USA. The company designs and manufactures its own products with ongoing investment in new processes and equipment. We have recently started our Lean manufacturing journey. We are a specialist manufacturer of locking systems, supplying a wide variety of locks for industrial and OEM applications. Our product range is extensive and includes simple mechanical locks, the latest electronic locks and many custom solutions.   • Pressure die casting.
  • Secondary & progression presswork.
  • CNC & manual machining.
  • Abrasive finishing.
  • Electroplating.
  • Powder coat painting.
  • Electronics manufacture.
  • Plastic over moulding.
  • Manual & automatic assembly.
This makes for a very interesting process environment. The Production Technicians take responsibility for ensuring that all aspects of product change-over, quality and output meet the required standard. We are investing in new production machinery and need hands-on Technician apprentices to help us get the full potential from the new investment. The work is interesting and varied, including initial fault finding and repairs to equipment. You will be “earning and learning” while gaining your qualifications and completing your apprenticeship. Duties will include:
  • Assisting and working under the guidance of Manufacturing Technicians, Maintenance fitters / electricians and machinery operators in the production of component parts and finished assemblies
  • Use of manufacturing drawings / CNC programs
  • Measurement of component parts / assemblies
  • Carrying out any other appropriate duties, as necessary

Other Information

The apprenticeship will consist of 1 year off the job training at Make UK. This will be followed by 2 years spending the majority of your time at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and training on a day release basis at Make UK, to complete your technical qualification. Years 3 and 4 will be spent completing a vocational qualification on site at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. On completion of your Level 3 apprenticeship, you would move on to study an HNC qualification, supported by the company.
