Vacancy Detail

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] (part of the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] group), operating within the nuclear industry, provides a capability in design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, commissioning, site installation and through-life support of bespoke engineered solutions for nuclear plant construction, existing plant operations, decommissioning of old nuclear plants, nuclear defence and nuclear fusion markets.

Its UK head office and manufacturing works in Wolverhampton is steeped in the engineering and manufacturing history of the Black Country since the 1820s. Previously the site of John Thompson’s, NEI Thompson, Clarke Chapman, Rolls-Royce Nuclear Engineering and latterly Nuclear Engineering Services, the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Group acquired the company in 2014 as part of its strategy to become a major player in the UK nuclear industry.

We are seeking to employ and train up to 12 apprentice(s) in total, which will grow our welding team by 60% due to an expected increase in our workload in 2023/24 and beyond.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will become a highly trained coded welder working within a highly regulated industry. Your training will be bespoke to the nuclear industry requirements and within a year, you will have the opportunity to gain your first welder qualifications so that you can start to work on our highly quality assured project work where the parts and products that you will make will safely go into nuclear facilities around the United Kingdom.

In the first year of your apprenticeship, you will spend the vast majority of your time at the training centre in Aston, Birmingham, where you will learn general workshop skills, complete welding and fabrication classroom study, continuous improvement techniques as well as plenty of hands-on welding practice so that you can hone your welding technique.

You will work with materials including mild steels, stainless steels and possibly even some exotic materials.

You will learn different welding processes such as TIG, MIG and Flux Core and will learn how to weld a variety of joint types and material thicknesses.

As you develop your skills, your welds will undergo greater levels of weld inspection and testing so that we know you are ready to work in the nuclear industry.

You will also learn fabrication skills and techniques which will complement your welding skills.

You will work in a clean and tidy workshop where the health and safety of our employees is our highest priority. You will work with a team of highly experienced people that will help, encourage and challenge you to reach your fullest potential.

On top of the Apprenticeship Qualifications you will achieve on your course, you will also receive the following in house training to ensure that you are well trained and confident:
General safety induction
Nuclear safety awareness
Welder qualifications to internationally recognised codes and standards
Visual weld inspection appreciation
Overhead crane operation
Manual handling
Working at height
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Control of Material Cross Contamination

You will need to go through a security clearance (SC) process due to the nature of our work. Once attaining your SC clearance, you will have the necessary clearance to work on our nuclear projects.

Once qualified, you will be required to work on our customers’ nuclear licenced sites. This will involve an element of travelling and working away from home for a period. Naturally, your accommodation and expenses are reimbursed for these trips.
