Brief Description

A unique opportunity to join a growing company and to develop into a multi-skilled service engineer within the heat treatment industry. The successful applicants will have hands on, one to one training with our engineers who have themselves completed engineering apprenticeships.

Qualifications Required

  • 3 GCSEs, or equivalent, at grade 4 (C) or above, to include maths, English language and preferably science or engineering.

Personal Qualities

  • Outgoing friendly personality, honest, good timekeeping and conscientious. Attention to detail.

Skills Required

  • Excellent communication skills, able to demonstrate a clear interest in working in the heat treatment/engineering industry. A good team player.

Training to be Provided

This 4 year programme will include:

  • Engineering Basic Skills training – off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham
  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering
  • A Technical Certificate (BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Engineering)
  • In house training in line with your requirements.

Future Prospects

The apprentice will progress into a fully qualified multi-skilled field service engineer. They will have their own vehicle, laptop and mobile phone. UK mainland travel is an everyday occurrence with opportunities of work in Ireland, Europe and worldwide. Ongoing training will be carried out in house and with external bodies where required.

In our 21st year [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] has a young engineering workforce all having completed apprenticeships, some starting here from school. Staff turnover is low. We are growing every year into exciting new business projects which see us not only working in the UK but across Europe and around the world. We have two engineers in Thailand at the moment so foreign travel is a potential opportunity.

Founded in 2000, [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] offer a complete package to our customers from bespoke new furnaces, spare parts, servicing and calibration. As an apprentice you will learn,

  • How all types of furnaces operate
  • Safe systems of work
  • Vacuum systems, including pumps, valves and control
  • Electrical systems, including PLC
  • Calibrations of new and current furnaces

All training is supervised and will take place at our premises in West Bromwich and at customer sites in the UK.

Once qualified you will:

  • Ensure the efficient and safe working of the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] systems by utilising the skills taught during your training
  • Carry out preventative maintenance daily and installation of new equipment as required
  • Calibrate new and current furnaces
  • Respond to and acting upon the fault report system
  • Update reporting IT system with any actions taken

You will receive support from your mentor throughout your training and your pay will be reviewed annually.

As this is a field based role, from Year 2, you must hold a current driving license (or expect to have one from September) because you will be given a company vehicle, laptop, mobile, fuel card and all the tools your will need to do your job.

Other Information

The candidates must consider the travelling aspect of the position. Apprentices in the first year will not be expected to travel but in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years there will be some working with [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] engineers on customer’s sites, this is essential to learn about the different equipment they will eventually be working on when they become engineers.
