Design Engineer – Scottish Power

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is hiring a Design Engineer to work on Scottish Power projects. This homebased role involves producing high-quality telecom solutions, providing technical support, and acting as Subject Matter Expert.

Location: Homebased (Remote) | Hours: 37.5 per week | Date Added: 20/02/26

Responsibilities

  • Interpret customer requirements and design scalable, repeatable, and practical solutions that align with existing services and standards.
  • Maintain quality assurance throughout the design and implementation process.
  • Approve technical documentation, including designs, implementation plans, and testing strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] & the Client's stakeholders, ensuring technical and project objectives are met while maintaining design integrity.
  • Develop strong relationships with customers, acting as a trusted advisor for telecom technical solutions.
  • Support the deployment and operation of networks, ensuring design adherence and documenting changes.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in technical, solution design, or consultancy role within telecoms.
  • A solid understanding of best practices in telecom design.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence both external and internal teams.
  • A proactive, solution-focused mindset with the ability to work under pressure, methodology, industry frameworks, and business processes.
  • The ability to quickly learn and master new technologies, keeping up with industry advancements.
  • Relevant technical certifications and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Familiarity with High-Level and Low-Level Design, Bills of Materials, and project costing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and design tools like Visio and AutoCAD.

Desirable

  • Previous experience with Energy Company Network.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Designing mission-critical, low-latency networks using SDH/PDH and MPLS/IP technologies over fibre, microwave, and leased line products.
  • Telecommunications installations within electrical substations.
  • IP networking, including Layer 2 & Layer 3 network design and WAN/LAN services.
  • SDH/PDH technology and the design of low-latency sub-rate services (V & X data, Voice Frequency, Optical Teleprotection).
  • Fibre system deployment, including utility fibre installations and third-party fibre.
  • DC power supply and battery system design.
  • Satellite communications (e.g., BGAN and T-SAT services).
  • Microwave radio systems (e.g., SIAE Electronica ALC+, AGS20).
  • Copper xDSL products, including BT WBMC and SHDSL over copper pilot cables.
  • Synchronisation networks (PRC, SSU, SEC, frequency, NTP, PTP).
