Founded in 1979, the international Action Against Hunger network operates in over 50 countries, providing life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations affected by emergencies. It addresses food insecurity from a variety of interventions including emergency relief, livelihood programmes, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and advocacy and policy influencing. Role specification

The Board of [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] plays a vital role in setting the strategic direction of the organisation, ensuring strong governance, and supporting the executive team to deliver impact at scale. Trustees bring diverse expertise and act collectively to provide both support and constructive challenge.

The incoming Trustee will join a committed and engaged Board at an important moment of strategic evolution.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing actively to Board discussions, helping to shape and oversee the delivery of the organisation’s strategy, including its 2025-2030 priorities
  • Providing insight and guidance on opportunities to diversify income, particularly through private philanthropy and high value partnerships
  • Acting as an ambassador for the organisation, building relationships and increasing visibility among high-net-worth individuals and philanthropic communities
  • Supporting the development of fundraising initiatives, events, and campaigns aimed at engaging new donor audiences
  • Offering access, where appropriate, to networks of individuals interested in gala dinners / special events and high-impact philanthropy
  • Ensuring that the organisation operates in compliance with its governing documents, charity law, and regulatory requirements
  • Overseeing financial stewardship, risk management, and the effective use of resources
  • Serving on one or more Board Committees as required

Trustees are also expected to engage beyond formal meetings, including attending events, building relationships with the executive team, and contributing to the broader life of the organisation.

Person specification

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking a Trustee who brings a strong commitment to its mission, alongside the ability to be an ambassador for the organisation.

Essential experience and skills:

  • Experience in environments where relationship-building, influence, and trust are critical (e.g. financial services, private equity, venture capital, family offices, wealth management, or similar)
  • An ambassadorial mindset, with the confidence and credibility to represent the organisation externally
  • The ability to think strategically, while understanding the distinction between executive and non-executive responsibilities
  • Sound judgement, integrity, and a collaborative approach to Board working
  • Interest in engaging with potential donors on behalf of AAH
  • Global and international networks would be of interest, but are not essential

Personal attributes:

  • A strong belief in the mission and values of Action Against Hunger
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to engage actively beyond Board meetings
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • An appreciation of the importance of building long-term, trust-based relationships

The Board is open to first-time Trustees and ultimately welcomes candidates from a range of professional backgrounds, provided they bring relevant commitment to the role.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed domestic travel expenses will be reimbursed. Trustee meetings take place every quarter, running for three hours in London in person. There are an additional four Committee meetings held virtually for one hour.

The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewed once at the discretion of the Board.
