Research Scientist

Salary: £37,500 to £40,600 per annum | Contract: Full-time, 5 years
Background
The Beraza Lab at the Quadram Institute studies how foods influence the liver-gut-microbiome axis throughout the lifespan. Our multidisciplinary research combines bioinformatics, molecular biology, and advanced imaging to uncover the mechanisms underlying diet-driven effects on gut and liver health. The lab’s work is regularly published in high-impact journals and presented at international conferences, providing excellent opportunities for scientific visibility and career development.
The Role
We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our collaborative and dynamic team. The successful candidate will work closely with the QIB Bioinformatics team, the Earlham Institute, and other collaborators, gaining access to state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced super-resolution microscopy at the QIB Bioimaging Facility. This role offers the opportunity to:
- Conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of nutrition, microbiome science, and liver biology.
- Build expertise in bioinformatics, in vivo and in vitro experimental design, and advanced imaging techniques.
- Present and publish research findings, strengthening communication and presentation skills.
- Supervise students, developing leadership and project management abilities.
- Expand professional networks through interdisciplinary collaboration at national and international levels.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology, or a related discipline, and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Bioinformatics analysis of large datasets, including single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing,
- Microbiome-related bioinformatics analysis of 16S rRNA, shotgun, or whole-genome sequencing datasets.
- Designing, performing, and analysing in vivo experiments.
- Flow cytometry; design, run and analysis
- Histopathology, and advanced microscopy (brightfield, fluorescence, confocal).
- Molecular biology techniques, such as qPCR, western blotting, and ELISA.
- Data analysis, manuscript preparation and writing
- Grant writing.
- Training and supervision of students or junior researcher
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Strong organisation and problem-solving abilities.
- The capacity to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- A proactive approach to developing new skills and advancing interdisciplinary research.
Additional Information
Salary on appointment will be within the range £37,500 to £40,600 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 5 years.
