Salary: £36,720 - £44,500 per annum
Contract: Full-time, 18 months

Job Description

We’re looking for a Research Scientist to join the Laboratory of Prof Martin Warren in the Food Microbiome and Health Programme at [Employer hidden] (QI), based in Norwich, UK. The aim of this project is to elucidate the detailed molecular characteristics of a range of remarkable vitamin B12 binding proteins that are found in a common genus of gut bacteria, and to exploit this information for biotechnological and industrial processes. This project will provide both basic and fundamental insights into the acquisition and trafficking of B12 within a key component of the gut microbiome.

It will provide essential molecular detail on a new class of vitamin B12 binding protein and generate new concepts on tight binding for salvaging purposes. It will allow exploitation of this remarkable binding capacity to address current real-world problems; in so doing, it will deliver a system that will have enormous benefit to both biotech and industry.

Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for an enthusiastic Research Scientist with expertise in biochemistry or molecular biology, along with a strong background in microbiology. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of bacterial adaptation and function within the human gut microbiome.

  • Proficiency in standard recombinant DNA techniques and protein purification
  • Experience with chemical approaches, including the analysis and application of synthetic molecules
  • Ability to integrate biochemical and chemical methodologies, including use of fluorescent B12 analogues for imaging
  • Strong track record in scientific writing, including peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience in delivering oral research presentations
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills

Additional Information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £36,720 to £44,500 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 18 months.
