Research Scientist
[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is seeking a Research Scientist to join the group of Dr Fred Warren in the Food Innovation and Health programme. This MRC-funded project investigates novel structured celluloses to reduce symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using microbiome studies and in vitro colon modelling, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham. The role is based at the Quadram Institute on the Norwich Research Park.
- Salary: £33,050 to £40,750 per annum
- Contract: Full-time, 3 years

The Role
The successful candidate will conduct microbiome studies to determine the impact of novel cellulose derivates on metabolic pathways in the gut in IBS patients. This will include in vitro model colon experiments using the advanced digestion models available at the Quadram Institute, as well as metagenomic and metabolomic analysis of stool samples obtained from human intervention studies. The candidate will be expected to prepare and contribute to manuscripts for publication and contribute to reporting to the funder.
The Ideal Candidate
- PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, nutrition, or related discipline
- Practical experience of conducting gut microbiome/nutrition experiments
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Experience with in vitro models of the human digestive system (beneficial)
- Experience/willingness to handle human stool samples (essential)

Salary on appointment will be within the range £33,050 to £40,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 36 months.
