Job Description
The [Employer hidden] (QI) is a pioneering interdisciplinary research centre at the forefront a new era in food and health research. It brings together clinical and non-clinical scientists in a new state-of-the-art building. Based on the Norwich Research Park, home of the John Innes Centre, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, The Earlham Institute and the University of East Anglia, it is one of the largest centres of life sciences in Europe.
We are in search of a Head of Bioinformatics to lead and cultivate a specialised bioinformatics core support team. This pivotal role is instrumental in enabling QI to achieve scientific excellence by providing exceptional leadership for planning and developing bioinformatics analyses. Collaborating closely with colleagues, stakeholders, and scientific communities within the Norwich Research Park, you will drive the creation of tailored systems to meet QI’s current and future needs as a world-class scientific institute.
As a technical expert, your responsibilities will include crafting sequence analysis pipelines for bacterial genomic, metagenomic, and transcriptomic datasets, potentially extending to eukaryotic transcriptomic analyses. You will also oversee the analysis of sequencing outputs, encompassing short and long read data from platforms like Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore. Guiding the development of customized analysis pipelines, your role will emphasize coaching, training, and effective communication skills.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Computing Science or a related field, along with extensive computational expertise in UNIX, Illumina, and other bioinformatics programs. Proficiency in cloud computing and specialized knowledge of molecular biology related to sequence generation are imperative. Substantial experience in computational work within biological sciences, along with operating various sequencing platforms, is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, coupled with the ability to lead and swiftly establish productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, are paramount for this position.
