FULL DESCRIPTION

PhD studentship: Microbial ecology and metagenomics of a foodborne pathogen (MATHERQ20DTP)

[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is offering a 4-year PhD studentship with a stipend of £15,285 per annum. The project will be based in Norwich, UK. Applications close on 06 July 2020.

Project Overview

Campylobacter is the commonest bacterial cause of diarrhoeal disease in the UK, often associated with poultry consumption. Detection is challenging, and this project uses metagenomic sequencing to examine interactions between Campylobacter and microbial communities in chicken samples. The research may lead to novel mechanisms to reduce Campylobacter survival in the food chain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct wet lab and dry lab work, including culturing Campylobacter diversity
  • Explore competitive exclusion of Campylobacter
  • Perform whole genome and metagenome sequencing and analysis
  • Develop skills in genomics, metagenomics, microbiology, ecology, epidemiology, and bioinformatics

Requirements

  • At least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent)
  • Interest in microbial ecology and foodborne pathogens
  • Willingness to learn computational and laboratory techniques

Funding and Eligibility

Funding is available to UK and EU nationals with established residency. Full studentships cover stipend, research costs, and tuition fees. EU nationals not meeting UK residency may receive a fees-only award with maintenance stipend. See NRPDTP website for details.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 24 July 2020. [Employer hidden] encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
