FULL DESCRIPTION

Research Scientist

[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is hiring a Research Scientist (Metabolic Modelling) in Norwich, UK. Salary: £35,300 to £43,750 per annum. Contract: 48 months, full or part-time. Closing date: 21 February 2024.

Background

Research in the Wain Group focuses on the use of metabolic modelling to understand the biology of bacteria in the food chain. Having used models of individual genomes to help explain how Campylobacter survives in the food chain, the next stage is to look at the metabolic aspects of the bacterial community within which Campylobacter survive and persist. Professor Wain also has an interest in using metagenomic data for bacterial typing and in establishing new technology in low to middle income countries.

The Role

The post holder will build and compare genome scale metabolic models of selected pathogens found on food. They will be expected to generate community scale metabolic models from metagenomic data of defined and natural communities. They will also grow and sequence defined bacterial communities and then build community scale metabolic models using BioCYC databases and SCRUMPY. Laboratory experiments will be necessary to validate the models – this will involve the growth of bacteria in food relevant conditions, sampling over time and the measurement of targeted metabolites.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in a biological subject, or equivalent, and experience in computational biology (metabolic modelling) and molecular biology with unusual organisms. Previous experience of supervising students or project scientists is essential.

Additional Information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £35,300 to £43,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. We welcome candidates seeking full-time or part-time hours, for a contract of 48 months.
