Project Scientist
[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is hiring a Project Scientist to join the Microbes and Food Safety Institute Strategic Programme. The role focuses on reducing human foodborne illness through improved food safety and reducing food waste due to microbial spoilage. This is a full-time position for 4 years, with a salary of £27,750 to £34,500 per annum.
The Role
The Project Scientist will support the investigation of food spoilage and the transmission of foodborne pathogens. Duties include isolation and proper storage of bacteria, performing molecular, genomic and phenotypic assays, characterising food microbiota, and sample preparation for microscopy and sequencing. Methods include isolate identification (by culture and DNA analysis), antibiotic susceptibility testing, biofilm evaluation, monitoring evolution under stress, and nucleic acid isolation for metagenomic sequencing.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a BSc or equivalent in microbiology or related sciences, knowledge of pathogenic microorganisms (HG2), experience with nucleic acid extraction, and previous work in a multiuser biological research laboratory adhering to quality control processes and reporting.
