Microbiology Research Assistant

Salary: £24,815 - £30,270 per annum | Contract: 18 months, full-time | Closing: 10 September 2019
Background
The Quadram Institute is at the forefront of a new interface between food science, gut biology and health. It will develop solutions to worldwide challenges in food-related disease and human health, and bring together the interdisciplinary teams and work with appropriate international organisations to address these major issues.
The Charles group focuses on the genomics, metagenomics and ecology of microorganisms in the food chain. Professor Narbad’s group has a particular interest in novel antimicrobial strategies for biocontrol of the gut and food borne pathogens. The post holder will also collaborate with Dr Rob Kingsley’s group at QIB.
The Role
We are seeking a Microbiology Research Assistant to isolate and identify bacteria from environmental samples and extract genomic DNA and perform biofilm studies. The successful candidate will liaise with industry-based microbiologists. This exciting project is funded by a BBSRC LINK grant and presents an excellent opportunity to develop industry relevant microbiology skills.
The Ideal Candidate
Candidates should possess a degree, or equivalent qualification, in Microbiology or Molecular Biology. They should have experience of handling pathogenic bacteria. Experience of biofilm analysis and molecular profiling of microbial communities is desirable.
Additional Information
Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,815 to £30,270 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime contract for a period of 18 months.
