Job Description

Applications are invited for a Project Scientist to join the Laboratory of Lindsay Hall in the Gut Microbes and Health Programme at [Employer hidden] (QIB). The goal of this Wellcome Trust funded position is to support ongoing lab activities including microbiota studies (clinical and lab-based) and support new projects to identify 'healthy' early life microbiota signatures.

Background

The Hall lab's research focus involves defining the interactions of the host with the gut microbiota, with a particular focus on the early life developmental window, and the genus Bifidobacterium. The lab has three main research themes including, microbe-diet interactions, microbe-host cross-talk, and colonisation resistance. For more details please visit www.halllab.co.uk.

The lab utilises multi-disciplinary approaches including microbiology (model-colon chemostat systems, molecular microbiology), metabolomics (NMR, MS), next generation sequencing (RNASeq, 16S rRNA, WGS), bioinformatics tools, in vivo models, and human studies.

The Role

Specific duties will include sample collection/organisation, DNA extraction, sequencing preparation, culturing, and in vitro experiments. The post holder will assist with laboratory management activities, such as ordering, and train students and visitors.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Background in biological research (e.g., microbiology)
  • Experience with microbiota studies preferred
  • BSc or equivalent in biomedical science or related field
  • Outstanding personal initiative and communication skills

Additional Information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is a fulltime post for a period of 10 months.
