Role Description

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Bioinformatician to join the Gut Microbes and Health Programme at [Employer hidden] (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Gut Microbes and Health Programme

The microbes that live inside our guts are mostly a mystery to science. We know they have an impact on our health and wellbeing that extends far beyond the gut but science currently doesn’t fully understand how or why. You can be part of this grand scientific endeavour to understand the microbes that live inside us all.

The Gut Microbes and Health Programme aims to obtain mechanistic knowledge on the role of the gut microbiome during normal healthy ageing in order to develop strategies that will improve lifelong health and wellbeing.

The Role

As a bioinformatician supporting this Programme, you will work with vast datasets of metagenomic sequence data (truly BigData) and will gain experience with cutting edge sequencing technologies, such as those from Nanopore and PacBio. At your disposal will be a massive OpenStack cloud computing system with hundreds of terabytes of disk space and thousands of computing cores.

You will be embedded within the core bioinformatics team for the Quadram Institute, so will be surrounded by experienced bioinformaticians, providing a friendly environment to enhance your skills. In this rapidly changing field you will have the opportunity to work with researchers on publishing new methodologies, which we make available as open source software on GitHub.

The Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidates will have a PhD in computing, computational biology, bioinformatics or a related computational subject, a strong proficiency in Linux, and an ability to program in at least one programming language to an advanced level. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as the post will involve working with staff across the Institute.

Additional Information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime contract for a period of 3 years.
