Research Scientist (Gut Systems Biology)
[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is hiring a Research Scientist to join the Gut Systems Biology group in Norwich, UK. This full-time position offers a salary of £31,625 to £38,575 per annum for a 27-month contract.
Background
The Korcsmaros group is a multi-disciplinary group that combines computational and experimental approaches to predict, analyse and validate gut related processes. The main interest of the group is related to the regulation of intestinal cells by microbes and upon disease conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The group is specialised in developing novel methods that combine systems biology, signalling networks with microbiome and clinical data, with a special interest in creating organoid based analytical platforms. The group is based in both QIB, specialising in state-of-the-art microbiome and health research, and the Earlham Institute (EI), specialising in genomics and systems biology. Both institutes are based on the Norwich Research Park. The joint affiliation provides access to the brand-new Quadram Institute building, which houses a large endoscopy unit and state-of-the-art microbiome and clinical research areas, allowing direct access to patient samples and laboratories as well as to EI’s cutting-edge sequencing platforms and one of Europe’s largest computing infrastructures for life sciences.
The Role
The Research Scientist will work on network and systems biology related projects focusing on gut homeostasis, intestinal host-microbiome interactions, autophagy and signalling networks as well as data integration from various omic sources to develop new models and in silico predictions. The Research Scientist will be an enthusiastic and motivated individual who will participate in studying integrative and systems-level problems. The position will be computational, offering flexibility and opportunities for personal development. The post holder will contribute to supervising students and to grant and manuscript writing. This position will give the applicant the opportunity to have an active role in building new projects within the Gut Microbes and Health Programme exploiting in-house generated data, offering independence, responsibility and scientific freedom. The post holder will have plenty of opportunities to learn novel techniques, data management technologies, interact with researchers with different backgrounds and work with cutting-edge approaches. Also, the post holder could participate in training and receive direct advice to develop to be a successful and happy independent researcher.
The Ideal Candidate
Applicants should have a PhD related to Computer Science, Gut Biology or Computational Biology. They should be able to evidence expertise in systems biology and network modelling and have knowledge of working with R or Julia or similar data science-oriented script languages. The successful candidate must have experience in git and version/source control systems, knowledge of working in a Linux environment (local and remote) and skills in HPC (slurm) and Python.
Additional Information
Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 27 months.
