Job Description

Applications are invited for a Project Scientist to join the Laboratory of Lindsay Hall in the Gut Microbes and Health Programme at the [Employer hidden] (QIB).

Background: The Hall lab’s research focus involves defining the interactions of the host with the intestinal microbiota, with a particular focus on the early life developmental window, and the genus Bifidobacterium. We have 3 main research themes including, microbe-diet interactions, microbe-host cross-talk, and colonisation resistance. For more details please visit www.halllab.co.uk.

The lab utilises multi-disciplinary approaches to explore these themes including; microbiology (model-colon chemostat systems, molecular microbiology), metabolomics (NMR, MS), next generation sequencing (RNASeq, 16s rRNA, WGS, both host and microbe), bioinformatics tools, in vivo models (germ-free and infection models), and human studies (preterm/term infants).

The role: The goal of this Wellcome Trust funded position is to support ongoing lab activities including microbiota studies (clinical and lab-based) and support new projects to identify ‘healthy’ early life microbiota signatures.

The ideal candidate: Applicants should have a background in biological research (e.g. microbiology), and ideally microbiota studies, and will act as a key member of the research group. A BSc or equivalent in biomedical science, or a related field is essential, as is outstanding personal initiative and communication skills.

Additional information: Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 15 months.
