Job Introduction

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, motivated, experienced and fully qualified, Specialist Teacher of the Vision Impaired (0.8 FTE) to join a large well-established local authority team. This is a peripatetic post supporting children and young people with vision impairment and their families in homes, mainstream, and specialist settings across the age range 0-25.

We operate county wide but deployment can be flexible dependent on the needs/location of children and the skills/experience match of the appointee. Currently, the area will include Lichfield, Cannock, Stafford and South Staffordshire.

Main Responsibility

  • Have day to day responsibility for a designated pupil list of children with a vision impairment.
  • Work across a variety of settings.
  • Assess children with a vision impairment.
  • Manage specialist VI equipment and provision of advice regarding its effective use in school and home settings.
  • Work closely with agencies / other professionals.
  • Assist in the social and emotional development of a child with a vision impairment.
  • Direct and supervise the Communication Support Workers (specialist TAs) involved with individual pupils.
  • Promote and build capacity by delivering training for schools and other settings and agencies.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Be a Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Have knowledge and experience of working in mainstream and / or special schools
  • Have experience of multi-agency working practices
  • Have good communication and listening skills
  • Have the ability to positively influence the teaching practice of others
  • Have good organisational skills
  • Have the flexibility to work in a variety of locations across Staffordshire
  • Have the ability to establish rapport with a wide variety of people
  • Be competent and confident in utilising ICT programmes
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Have the ability to work as part of a team
  • Hold a current driving licence (special arrangements can apply for people with disabilities)
