Job Summary
This is a specialist role where you will develop expertise and provide education in managing the wounds of cardiothoracic patients, patients requiring specialist respiratory support and specialist cardiology care. The role encompasses supporting surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance. The SSI role involves supporting a small SSI team who through surveillance, report back on rates of wound infection in cardiac surgery patients, analyse data for trends and be involved in coordinating a response to any observed rise in infection rates in excess of national benchmarks. The education role is a key aspect of the role profile. You will work closely with our team to evaluate the current evidence, support practice development in the sphere of wound care and support delivery of the team's education strategy. There is the opportunity to support primary research projects in the area of wound care. The post holder will work autonomously under the direction of the Nurse Consultant for Wound Care Tissue Viability to deliver a consistent approach to managing complex wounds and continue to develop the SSI surveillance service which currently feeds findings back to local and national reporting bodies.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Professional adult nursing qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level. Evidence of post graduate training/development/experience in leadership and/or management OR specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience. Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Experience
Essential: To act as a senior support to care for complex patients; to use clinical knowledge/expertise provide a high standard of skilled care; to be able to prioritise care; to use judgement and assessment skills; to devise and implement complex care plans; to undertake complex nursing interventions such as complex wound assessment and management; to have frequent exposure to bodily fluids; to effectively communicate complex information; to deliver Trust-wide communication and education; to present at internal and external forums; to manage own patient workload; to act independently within NMC code; to understand escalation procedures; to act as a role model; to be responsible for clinical supervision; to deputise and line manage; to devise and implement specialist education programmes; to deliver Trust-wide wound management education; to propose and implement policies; to lead investigations of surgical site infections; to participate in research and audits; to survey surgical patients and upload findings; to maintain accurate records.
