Oceanographic Instrumentation Support Scientist

Location: On-site at SAMS, Oban

Contract Type: Open-ended

Working Pattern: Full Time (37 hrs per week)

Salary: Grade 5/6, £29,619 - £39,745 per annum

The Role

Supporting the physical oceanography activities at SAMS, your role will comprise both technical duties and data processing. You will be responsible for the processing and analysis of oceanographic datasets, from ship-based instrumentation, moorings, and/or autonomous platforms. You will manage and maintain our pool of oceanographic instrumentation and deploy it at sea in both coastal and offshore environments. You will also contribute to our robotics activities, which include underwater gliders, AUVs and ROVs.

The post duties include some out-of-hours glider piloting and offshore seagoing, which attract additional monetary compensation. The Grade 6 salary would be considered for exceptional candidates with very significant experience in instrumentation, data analysis and moorings design and deployment.

The postholder will have the opportunity for continuous professional development, upskilling, and exploring any future accounts certificated courses, where time and funding allows.

Our ideal candidate will be experienced in oceanographic data processing, and proficient in the use of Matlab and/or Python. You will also have in-depth technical expertise of oceanographic instruments, including hands-on experience working with them at sea.
