About the Role
At [Employer hidden], we are looking for a passionate Staff Embedded Hardware Engineer, to develop, test & maintain embedded hardware components. Use cases include our next generation wearable medical devices, bespoke testing tools & manufacturing aids. The right candidate would champion engineering best practices & own process improvements.
You have the exciting opportunity to work with a strongly multi-disciplinary team, reaching Embedded Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sensor Development, through to App and Back-End Development.
Responsibilities
- Product PCBA design
- Experimental feature “Proof of Concept” feasibility investigations
- Hardware test set up development – manual & automated
- Own improvements to high performance processes for developing efficient, reliable & maintainable embedded systems
- Capture requirements & pull these through the engineering process from implementation, component test & system level test
Past Experience
5 years experience in a hardware related field
Great to have:
- Experience with wearable devices
- Medical and/or regulated industry experience
Requirements
Hardware
- Low power hardware optimisation
- Small PCBA size optimisation
- Fluent in mechanical integration trade-offs
- Schematic design
- Multi-layer PCB design
- Hardware bring-up
- High precision low noise analogue
- Measurement uncertainty stack-ups
- Digital circuits, MCUs, digital buses (I2C, SPI etc.)
- RF design principles, impedance matching and transmission lines
- BLE Antenna design
- Knowledge of IEC 60601 & translating requirements to electronic design features
- Design for Excellence (Design for X)
- Manufacturability
- Electromagnetic Compatibility
- Testability
Systems Engineering & Cross Team Qualities
- Translating & allocating requirements to electronics architectures & block diagrams
- Test driven mindset. “The proof is in the pudding (read: test)”
- Methodical risk analysis techniques like FMEA.
- Appreciation of user hazards & product-level risks.
- Fluent in version control approaches & being comfortable with validating for example “the file marked version 1 is indeed the true version 1”
- Being on top of interface control (e.g. interface control documentation to manage interfaces with other components & teams).
- Elicit requirements from stakeholders

- LTSpice & other modelling tools
Processes
- Undertaking Layout Reviews, Inspections, Walkthroughs.
- Experience with version control tools (e.g. Git), workflow tracking (e.g. JIRA)
- Ability to work fluently with other engineering disciplines (Mechanical Engineering, Embedded Software Engineering, Sensor Development etc.)
- Project Management of time & resources, and owning timing plans for work
Preferred
- Knowledge of mains facing circuits, design techniques & general user safety
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python
