Course Overview
There is no set pathway to commencing your medical journey. If you’ve always considered becoming a doctor but decided to study a different subject at degree level, this course is ideal for you. Our four-year Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) course has been designed specifically for graduates who are ready to embark on a career in medicine.
Teaching and learning
The course utilizes a variety of teaching methods including anatomy sessions, clinical relevance sessions, clinical skills sessions, eLearning, lab sessions, lectures, placements, practical classes, problem-based learning, prosection, self-study, seminars, small group learning, tutorials, and workshops. Assessment methods include case studies, clinical exams, coursework, examinations, formative assessments, logbooks, objective structured clinical exams, portfolios, poster presentations, practical exams, presentations, short projects, and workplace-based assessments.
During the first 18 months, teaching is at University Park and the School of Medicine, with 10-15 hours of contact time per week, supported by eight hours of digital learning resources. Students also undertake placements approximately four hours every five weeks. Total study time is estimated at 35-40 hours per week. The academic year is longer than normal, with Year 1 starting in early September and finishing mid-late June, and Year 2 starting in late August and ending in February. During the Clinical Phase, students spend 35-40 hours per week on study and placements, including ward, clinic, or GP visits, and eight hours of independent study, potentially including out-of-hours work. All candidates are considered on an individual basis. For 2026 entry, a minimum of a 2:2 degree in any discipline is required. Applicants who have completed or are due to complete a postgraduate master's or PhD degree may be considered with a third-class undergraduate degree. A GCSE grade 6 (B) or equivalent in maths is also required. Applicants must take the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) before submitting their UCAS application, with specific minimum scores usually required for interview consideration (55 in Section 2, 55 in either Section 1 or 3, and 50 in the remaining section). English language proficiency can be demonstrated through IELTS 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element) or equivalent qualifications. Previous study of medicine at another institution in the UK is generally not accepted.
Placements
The course includes 15 main placements over the clinical phase, each lasting four to six weeks, in settings such as medical, surgical, specialty skills, mental health, and community-based medicine. Placements can occur at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital, Highbury Hospital, Royal Derby Hospital, King's Mill Hospital, Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and GP practices across the region. An elective period of study in the UK or abroad is available in the final year.

For 2026/27, UK undergraduate tuition fees are £9,790 per year, increasing to £10,050 for the 2027/28 academic year. International student fees are £47,000 per year. Additional costs include an enhanced DBS check (£40), optional DBS update service subscription (£13/year), and a stethoscope (£65+). Some smart clothes for clinical work may also be necessary. NHS bursary funding may be available for UK students from the second year.
Careers
Graduates will receive a BMBS degree, qualifying them for provisional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and requiring them to pass the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), which is embedded within the course assessments. Graduates will then enter a two-year paid foundation programme. The average annual starting salary for graduates is £37,060, with potential progression to senior clinical posts earning up to £131,964 p.a. 95% of School of Medicine undergraduates secured graduate-level employment or further study within 15 months of graduation.
