Scrub Technician Apprentice

Job Description

We hear from Jack who’s building a new career through an apprenticeship. He originally went to university to study psychology. After graduating, he spent a year teaching English in China before returning to the UK to work in a COVID‑19 laboratory. He later applied to [Employer hidden] as an HCA and then moved into the Scrub Technician role when it became available.

I currently work as a Scrub Technician. My role involves preparing surgical equipment for the surgeon both before and during procedures to ensure everything runs smoothly.

I discovered that I really enjoy working in an operating theatre, particularly through my scrubbing responsibilities. I’m keen to develop my knowledge of more complex surgeries and anaesthetic care so I can play a greater role across perioperative areas. The apprenticeship allows me to learn and work simultaneously, applying new knowledge directly to my role.

I have dedicated time allocated to university work, and I organise my assignments and study activities around this and my usual workload. Because much of the content links directly to my day‑to‑day duties, the practical experience reinforces what I learn in lectures.

Alongside funding my apprenticeship, [Employer hidden] has given me opportunities to observe surgeries in other hospitals and supported time away for external placements. We also have an abundance of knowledgeable staff who are always happy to explain new concepts in more depth and answer any questions I have.

Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for anyone who wants to learn while working. They’re especially valuable later in life when the traditional university route may not be practical, affordable or appealing. They also allow you to get a true feel for the job before committing to further study - something that university courses rarely provide, as many students don’t experience the reality of the role until much later
