Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Telecoms Design Engineer to join our team, specialising in telecommunications systems for the railway industry, with a particular focus on London Underground projects. The successful candidate will bring expertise in Wide Area Networks (WAN), IP protocols, and station communication systems, with a solid understanding of TfL’s Pathway Project Lifecycle process to ensure effective delivery and compliance in a complex and safety-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed designs for telecoms systems, including WAN, IP networks, and station communications, ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and TfL’s Pathway process.
  • Produce technical documentation, including schematics, layouts, and system architecture diagrams.
  • Liaise with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders to capture requirements and provide design updates, aligning with TfL’s Pathway project lifecycle.
  • Ensure all designs meet London Underground and railway-specific safety and performance standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate telecoms systems with other infrastructure components.
  • Oversee factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) of telecom systems.
  • Ensure designs adhere to relevant railway and telecom standards, such as Network Rail and London Underground guidelines, as well as TfL’s governance and assurance requirements outlined in the Pathway process.
  • Maintain compliance with safety-critical regulations and procedures.

Qualifications and skills

Education and Certifications

  • Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional membership or chartership (e.g., IET, IRSE) is highly desirable.
  • Relevant certifications in IP networking (e.g., Cisco CCNA/CCNP) are a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in telecoms engineering within the railway sector, ideally with London Underground or similar urban transit systems.
  • Proven track record in designing WANs, IP-based networks, and station communications systems.

Technical Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of WAN architecture and IP protocols (e.g., IPv4/IPv6, TCP/IP, MPLS, VLAN).
  • Familiarity with station communication systems, including public address, CCTV, SCADA, and passenger information systems (PIS).
  • Experience with fibre-optic systems, structured cabling, and telecoms hardware.

TfL Pathway Knowledge

  • Demonstrable familiarity with TfL’s Pathway project lifecycle, including governance, assurance, and project delivery stages.

Standards & Compliance

  • Strong understanding of railway-specific standards and processes, including TfL/London Underground requirements.
  • Knowledge of cyber-security principles for railway telecoms systems is advantageous.
