We have two Cartographic Editor roles at Collins. They involve research, verify and preparing geographic content for print and digital maps and cartographic databases (The Times atlases, Collins maps, A-Z, Collins Bartholomew digital). Manage revision workflows, monitor sources and work to editorial standards and deadlines to ensure maps are accurate, consistent and ready for production. You’ll work with the team to evaluate practical applications of AI to speed up and improve map maintenance and update workflows.

Key tasks and accountabilities

  • Monitor, research and validate authoritative sources, news, customer feedback and other information streams to identify, assess and prioritise geographic and road/rail infrastructure changes for map/data updates.
  • Maintain revision records, update logs, watching briefs and records of pending or incomplete changes until ready for implementation.
  • Edit and update map/data content (names, boundaries, transport, POIs, etc.) to reflect current information across the product range.
  • Support policy, approval, reprint and new-edition workflows and responses to map approval requests.
  • Coordinate with cartographers, GIS/DTP staff and external suppliers to deliver final map assets.
  • Meet deadlines and manage priorities across multiple update tasks.
  • Apply editorial policy, cartographic style and quality standards to ensure clarity and consistency, and support proofreading, error correction and final sign-off.
  • Use AI tools to automate repetitive tasks (assessing governance/copyright) and recommend workflow/product improvements while keeping stakeholders informed.

Skills required

  • Practical knowledge of maps and geographic information; excellent map‑reading skills.
  • Good editorial judgement, attention to detail and strong organisational/time‑management skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communicator; able to explain decisions and brief colleagues.
  • Logical thinker and proactive problem solver.
  • Familiarity with GIS and common cartographic/DTP tools (QGIS, ArcGIS,) desirable.
  • Awareness of data licensing, copyright, attribution and quality assessment desirable.
