Archivist

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is seeking to appoint an Archivist to work for the Knowledge & Information Services department located in London. Responsibilities include managing the IISS archive, developing the IISS Archives, cataloguing materials, assessing material for conservation and potential digitisation, and advising researchers.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading international think tank providing independent and objective information and analysis on military, geopolitical and geo-economic developments that could lead to conflict.

The Institute is seeking to appoint an Archivist to work for the Knowledge & Information Services department located in London.

Responsibilities:

  • Management of the IISS archive: Complete the setting up of the IISS archive and take the lead on planning and prioritising future archive and records management initiatives.
  • Development: Take responsibility for the development of the IISS Archives by creating finding aids; developing the E-Archives; refining archival policies and procedures in accordance with accepted standards and practices.
  • Cataloguing: Catalogue print, electronic and audio-visual material to a high professional standard.
  • Conservation: Assess material for conservation and potential digitisation.
  • Research Advice: Advise and assist researchers in the use of archival materials in research activities.

Requirements:

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in either Archives/Records Management or Librarianship/Information Science.
  • Significant experience of working in an archive or information service, including the provision of research assistance.
  • Significant experience of archive and library management systems.
  • Strong core technical collection management skills - cataloguing, indexing and stock selection.
  • The ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload to meet deadlines.
