Senior Fellow for Defence and Military Analysis and Editor, The Military Balance
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a world-leading think tank which examines issues of global security, political risk and military conflict. As well as its headquarters in London, the IISS has offices in Berlin, Manama, Singapore and Washington DC. We are seeking to appoint a Senior Fellow for Defence and Military Analysis and Editor of our flagship product, The Military Balance/Military Balance+. The role is based in London, reporting to the Head of the Defence and Military Analysis Programme (DMAP).
The successful candidate will have knowledge of global military issues, will have written and published in this area, and will have editing experience. They will also be able to deliver insights that will help the IISS deepen innovation in our defence products and bring expertise in defence data integration and visualisation.
Key Duties/Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and commissioning of analytical content – including text, graphics and data – for the Military Balance+ database and *The Military Balance* book, in consultation and coordination with other senior DMAP team members.
- Editing and writing copy, managing an Assistant Editor and improving editorial processes.
- Lead in the innovation of the Military Balance+ database and the annual book, including through the creation and implementation of a development roadmap.
- Working with colleagues to understand customer defence analysis and data requirements, to help shape Military Balance content into new products, services and data streams that have business intelligence utility.
- Expanding the subscriber base and revenue through innovative Military Balance+ content and data visualisation.
- Enhancing the quality, integration, visibility and influence of IISS defence data, by leading the transformation of IISS defence data integration, visualisation and output.
- Maintain and develop personal and institutional contacts in order to improve the quality of IISS defence data and analytical insight.
- Working with colleagues to improve the information monitoring, gathering and assessment processes needed to generate IISS defence data.
- Maintain and/or develop defence research interests and activities and support fundraising efforts as directed by the Head of DMAP.
- Producing research proposals and working with colleagues on commissioned research activities.
- Attend and take part in, and present at, conferences and workshops or other events as appropriate.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant subject.
- An understanding of international affairs and global military issues is essential.
- Experience with defence data analysis, integration and dissemination.
- Experience of working in government, the armed forces or defence industry would be an advantage, as would experience of working in the editorial team or publications department of a think tank, the specialist press or a professional society.
- Experience of scheduling and resource management.
- Experience of line management, both face to face and with international/remote staff.
- Strong networking and relationship-building skills, and a confident, capable approach to working with internal stakeholders at all levels.
- Excellent project management and negotiation skills.
Remuneration
Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. The IISS provides a full employment package.
