An opportunity has arisen for two internships in the South and Central Asian Defence, Strategy and Diplomacy Programme’s team. The region covers Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and key Central Asian and Indian Ocean Island states.

Hours: 20 hours per week Contract: Fixed term (Six weeks) Location: London Start: February 2025
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a defence and security think tank that has a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and geo-economics in a global context. Its international researchers provide best-in-class independent and impartial analysis and provide insights on strategic challenges and priorities to governments and the private sector. It is expert at bringing together national leaders and senior policymakers in foreign policy, defence and security; promoting dialogue; and facilitating effective and influential bilateral and multilateral consultations.
An opportunity has arisen for two internships in the South and Central Asian Defence, Strategy and Diplomacy Programme’s team. The region covers Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and key Central Asian and Indian Ocean Island states.
Responsibilities:
- One internship will assist the IISS Senior Fellow for South and Central Asia and Head of the South and Central Asia Programme on regional security issues, with research work on Afghanistan/India/Pakistan.
- The second internship will assist the IISS Senior Fellow for South and Central Asia with research work on emerging and disruptive technology defence and strategic partnerships in South Asia (with a preferred focus on India).
- Other administrative tasks, as needed.
Requirements:
- Be working towards a bachelor degree in the field of international relations, defence and security, economics, or other relevant topics.
- Have a working knowledge and understanding of either regional security issues in South Asia, or on emerging and disruptive technologies in South Asia/India.
- Have demonstrable ability to write to high standards of English.
- Be able to begin the role in February 2025.
Remuneration:
Both internship opportunities will be paid.
