FULL DESCRIPTION

Research Fellow and Managing Editor, The Adelphi Series

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is seeking a Managing Editor for The Adelphi Series, who will also serve as a Research Fellow. The role involves commissioning books, reviewing manuscripts, editing, and contributing to the Institute's research profile through writing, commentary, and event participation. Candidates must have a PhD-level knowledge of international relations or a related field, excellent writing and editing skills, and eligibility to work in the UK, Germany, or the US.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Editor and, in consultation with the Editor, commission books, review manuscripts and conduct substantive ‘structural’ editing (providing detailed feedback, comments and suggested revisions to the manuscript; engaging the authors on issues of argument, substance and structure; and engaging in hands-on editing and re-writing if this is required to amend issues of style or content).
  • Oversee the production of books in collaboration with colleagues elsewhere in the Institute, especially in the Editorial, Design and Communications departments.
  • Work with internal or external peer reviewers, and other internal or external stakeholders.
  • Contribute and/or help to organise internal and external events relating to the Series.
  • Contribute to the future direction of the Series through consultation with the Editor.
  • In their research role, the selected candidate will contribute to the Institute’s work and profile through written scholarship, commentary and analysis for IISS and outside publications, as well as IISS events, public lectures, roundtables and research fundraising.

Requirements

  • PhD-level knowledge of international relations, history, politics or a related field; or equivalent journalistic or practitioner experience.
  • A body of published work demonstrating writing talent and significant intellectual accomplishment.
  • Eligibility to work in either the United Kingdom; Germany; or the United States.
  • Superlative, native-level command of spoken and written English.
  • Meticulous editing and excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to work both under direction and independently, as required.

Application

Candidates should submit their applications by clicking the blue “Apply Now” button and following the instructions to submit two documents: A cover letter outlining what skills and experience they can bring to the role. A full Curriculum Vitae (CV) and writing sample.
