FULL DESCRIPTION

Clarinet Teacher (VMT)

Deliver high-quality individual clarinet lessons to students aged 13–18, with a strong focus on effective practice habits and measurable musical progress. Prepare pupils for performances, examinations, auditions and festivals. Communicate regularly with the Head of Instrumental Studies regarding pupil progress.

Job Purpose:

  • Deliver high-quality individual clarinet lessons to students aged 13–18, across a wide range of abilities, with a strong focus on effective practice habits and measurable musical progress.
  • Support and guide pupils in developing independent practice strategies, fostering long-term musical growth and engagement.
  • Prepare pupils for performances, examinations, auditions and festivals, ensuring progress is aligned with individual goals and potential.
  • Prepare pupils for the performance components of GCSE, A level and IB examinations, in line with current examination board specifications (Eduqas GCSE, AQA A level and IB).
  • Actively encourage and support pupil participation in ensembles, fostering collaborative musicianship and a strong departmental culture.
  • Arrange and contribute to performance opportunities, maintaining awareness of and engagement with the College concert and events schedule.
  • Deliver and support taster lessons and recruitment activities, contributing to the growth and sustainability of the clarinet department.
  • Communicate regularly with the Head of Instrumental Studies regarding pupil progress, engagement, ensemble involvement and departmental development.
  • Undertake administrative responsibilities associated with the role, including maintaining registers, setting and recording practice tasks (via notebooks or OneNote), writing reports and submitting pay claims.
  • Attend the annual Visiting Music Teacher (VMT) INSET day.
  • Participate in outreach and partnership projects, in consultation with the Head of Instrumental Studies.
  • Perform in College concerts as agreed with the Head of Instrumental Studies (dates and fees to be confirmed in advance).

Qualifications and experience required for this role:

  • The ability to motivate and inspire pupils, promoting consistent progress through tailored teaching and structured practice.
  • A strong understanding of instrumental pedagogy and effective practice methodologies.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Clear and effective communication with pupils, parents and colleagues.
  • The ability to engage positively with ensembles and wider departmental initiatives.
