As an Assistant Planning Enforcement Officer, working with the Planning Enforcement Officer and as part of a wider Development Management team, you will play an important role in ensuring that development is carried out lawfully and determining when action is required in the public interest. The Role

As an Assistant Planning Enforcement Officer, working with the Planning Enforcement Officer and as part of a wider Development Management team, you will play an important role in ensuring that development is carried out lawfully and determining when action is required in the public interest. As an Assistant Planning Enforcement Officer, you will:

  • Manage, prioritise and investigate a caseload of planning enforcement complaints, mainly relating to householder developments
  • Interpret legislation, policy and planning history
  • Undertake site visits and gather evidence
  • Negotiate solutions where appropriate
  • Prepare reports and recommendations
  • Draft and serve formal notices where necessary, with support from the Planning Enforcement Officer/Service Managers

You will be supported by experienced colleagues within our Development Management team, including planning, heritage, landscape and tree officers and will work collaboratively with other disciplines, such as Environmental Health, Housing, Building Control and City Services.

This role offers genuine responsibility, professional challenge and the chance to see the tangible results of your work in the community, whilst being trained and mentored within a team as you enhance your skillset.

Who We’re Looking For

- candidates with experience in a regulatory enforcement role, and/or

- Graduates or candidates with a relevant degree (Law, Planning, Geography or similar) looking to start a career in an enforcement role

You Will Bring

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, that enable you to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your time and a range of cases
  • Attention to detail, investigative and problem-solving skills
  • Good judgement and resilience
  • A commitment to high-quality customer service
  • An understanding of how local government operates, and the purpose and importance of planning enforcement
  • An appreciation of heritage and environmental protection
  • Aptitude and ambition to develop in the role.
  • Competency in using standard office software. Experience of GIS is desirable
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits (or ability to meet travel requirements)
