This is a key regulatory role focused on improving housing standards across the borough and protecting residents living in the private rented sector.

[Employer hidden] is seeking a professional, motivated and experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join our established Environmental Health team. This is a key regulatory role focused on improving housing standards across the borough and protecting residents living in the private rented sector.
You will undertake complex inspections, investigations and enforcement activity across a wide range of housing legislation, including private rented homes and Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). The role combines strong technical expertise with professional judgement, partnership working and a commitment to achieving positive outcomes for tenants, landlords and the wider community.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Inspect domestic properties and HMOs, responding to complaints and intelligence‑led investigations
- Deliver the Council’s HMO licensing and compliance functions, ensuring legal standards are met
- Take formal and informal enforcement action, including serving notices, preparing civil penalty cases and prosecutions
- Prepare statements of evidence, interview under PACE and present cases in court and at hearings
- Provide expert advice to tenants, landlords, Members, partner agencies and senior officers on complex housing legislation
- Contribute to service improvement, policy development, projects and income generation initiatives within Private Sector Housing
About you
You will be:
- A qualified Environmental Health Officer or equivalent
- An experienced housing enforcement professional with substantial knowledge of housing legislation, including HHSRS, HMOs and regulatory processes
- Confident managing complex casework, investigations and competing priorities
- Skilled in influencing, negotiation and partnership working
- Comfortable exercising professional judgement in sensitive and high‑impact situations
- Committed to high standards of public service, regulatory integrity and customer care
A full driving licence is required, and the role involves site visits across the borough, sometimes in challenging environments.
