Job Details

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Highway Management Engineer to join our dedicated team, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Solihull’s roads, footpaths, and bridleways.

At Solihull Council, we pride ourselves on being small enough to care, big enough to make a difference. We work closely with partners across the public sector, businesses, voluntary organisations, and local communities to improve the lives of our residents.

This is an exciting time to join us. We’re delivering major projects such as High-Speed 2, M42 Junction 5a, and our housing growth programme, alongside ambitious developments at Birmingham Airport, the NEC, and Arden Cross.

The Highways Team looks after a wide range of services including routine and reactive asset maintenance, Streetworks and highway permits, Traffic Regulation Orders, road safety, Public Rights of Way and overall network management. Together, this work helps us maintain one of the best-performing highway networks in the country.

With significant change ahead, this is your chance to help shape how people travel in the future.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will have,

  • a Level 4 qualification (e.g., HNC) or above in Engineering or a related subject, or substantial relevant experience and training in civil engineering, highway management or similar.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of traffic management, collision analysis, road safety, and statutory legislation including TSRGD
  • Proven experience implementing Traffic Regulation Orders.
  • Strong partnership working skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

This is an essential car user role. You will be required to travel across the borough to understand the network and bring you own vision and experience on how we can improve the impacts and road safety.  Applicants must hold a valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle. Reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled applicants where required.

What we offer:

  • A range of flexible working options including hybrid working
  • Generous annual leave entitlements with the opportunity to purchase up to 10-days additional leave per year.
  • A flexitime scheme
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Programme – a 24-hour independent, free and confidential advice and support service
  • Family and carer friendly policies
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Employee benefits including staff discounts, subsidised travel passes and Cycle 2 Work Scheme
  • As an essential car user, free parking is available.
