An established and growing freight forwarding business is currently seeking an experienced Import Clerk to join their team as part of an internal restructure within their Operations department. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with strong sea import experience and customs knowledge to take ownership of shipments in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with scope to broaden into multi-modal operations over time.
The Opportunity
An established and growing freight forwarding business is currently seeking an experienced Import Clerk to join their team as part of an internal restructure within their Operations department.
This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with strong sea import experience and customs knowledge to take ownership of shipments in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with scope to broaden into multi-modal operations over time.
The Role
This is a fully office-based position with a primary focus on sea freight imports, alongside involvement in air freight shipments.
The successful candidate will manage shipments on a start-to-finish basis, from quotation through to final invoicing, while building relationships with allocated customers and supporting wider operational requirements where needed.
There will also be opportunities to gain exposure to export operations, as the business encourages a multi-modal and adaptable approach across the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage import shipments from quotation through to completion and invoicing
- Handle predominantly sea freight imports, with some air freight involvement
- Complete and submit import declarations using ASM Sequoia or similar systems
- Ensure all documentation complies with current customs regulations and legislation
- Monitor arrivals and coordinate timely customs clearance
- Liaise with HMRC and other relevant authorities regarding inspections and checks
- Manage post-entry amendments and maintain accurate records
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and internal teams
- Complete road freight import entries (inventory and non-inventory linked – training can be provided)
- Support operational and reporting requirements where necessary
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a freight forwarding or customs brokerage environment
- Strong sea import experience (essential) and air import knowledge (preferred)
- Proven experience completing import declarations (essential)
- Working knowledge of CDS and customs software (e.g. ASM Sequoia or similar)
- Understanding of HMRC Tariff and customs procedures
- Experience using port community systems such as CNS and Destin8
- Export knowledge advantageous but not essential
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Ability to manage workload independently and prioritise effectively
- Competent IT skills (Word, Excel, and general systems)

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced operational environment. You will be confident managing your own customers while remaining flexible to support team requirements when needed.
A willingness to learn and develop across multiple freight modes is key, as cross-training and team support are actively encouraged.
