The Graduate Music Assistant will support the day-to-day running of the Music Department, offering musical, administrative, and logistical support while gaining experience working with young people. The role involves assisting with administration, supporting classroom lessons, supervising pupils, and assisting with concerts.

The post of Graduate Music Assistant at [Employer hidden] offers a unique opportunity to join a busy and thriving department. The successful candidate will assist with the day to day running of the Music Department and will offer musical, administrative, and logistical support whilst gaining valuable experience working with young people in a school environment. The post holder will be able to support ensembles and choirs, gain experience in department admin and classroom activities.

We welcome applications from enthusiastic musicians with excellent organisational skills who can work individually and as part of a team. The position would particularly suit a university graduate who is considering a career in music or teaching music. The successful candidate will be an excellent performing musician, likely with strong piano/keyboard skills.

Role Responsibility

  • Assist with departmental administration such as cataloguing music, preparing music for rehearsals and assisting the Visiting Music Teachers, photocopying and other support as necessary, such as refreshing display boards and resources for lessons.
  • Supporting classroom lessons – opportunity to work with small groups during lessons
  • Supervision of pupils practising during break and lunch times, engaging with them in a mature and positive way
  • Provide support in ensemble and choir rehearsals.
  • Assist with concert planning and delivery - helping to collate information for concert programmes and plan rehearsals schedules.
  • Provide Front of House support at concerts - greeting audience, helping set up and stage manage, help students prepare for performances.
  • General assistance with the day-to-day running of the department
  • Assist and supervise pupils taking part in school trips as and when they take place, paying particular attention to the behaviour and safety of pupils.

Hours of Work

8:00 - 16:30 Monday to Friday, term-time only. The Graduate music assistant will additionally be required to attend department events and concerts, involving evening hours, most likely in the capacity of front of house or stage management.

The post is a fixed term role for one academic year, commencing in September 2024
