We’ve partnered with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) to offer a fully-funded training course for unemployed residents in West Yorkshire.

In just 15 weeks, this course will give you the foundational skills you need to get started in the digital sector. Best of all, it comes with a guaranteed job interview when you finish.

What you'll learn on the Level 2 Coding Course in West Yorkshire

This course is all about giving you useful, practical knowledge that you can take straight into a new job. You’ll earn two separate qualifications:

  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Coding: This gives you the technical skills.
  • Highfield Level 2 Certificate in Personal Development for Employability: This gets you ready for the workplace and your interview.

Modules

Understand the principles of coding:

Explore the foundational concepts of software creation, from common programming languages to the key stages of the development lifecycle. You will learn about the various career paths available and the essential skills needed to succeed as a coding professional.

Understand terminology used in coding:

Master the essential language of tech, from core computer hardware components like the CPU and RAM to fundamental coding concepts such as variables, functions, and control flow. This unit ensures you can confidently understand and use industry-standard terminology.

Understand coding design principles:

Explore the various philosophies behind code writing, including styles such as imperative and declarative programming. You will learn the advantages of pure functions and the distinctions between compiled and interpreted code, enabling you to write higher-quality, more efficient programs.

Understand the processes and practice of coding:

Develop knowledge of industry best practices for writing clean, simple code using principles like KISS and SOLID. This unit covers the critical processes of testing, debugging, and modern DevOps practices, including continuous integration and delivery.

Understand the importance of communication and project management in coding:

Gain insight into the crucial non-technical skills required in tech teams. Learn effective communication strategies, feedback techniques, and how popular project management methodologies like Agile and Scrum are used to deliver successful software projects.

It’s that simple. Our main goal is to help you find meaningful work, and we aim to get half of our learners into a new job within two months of finishing this course. Here’s how we support you:

Assessment includes:

  • How You’ll Learn: The course is a mix of face-to-face sessions at a local centre and live classes on Zoom, so you get the best of both worlds. You can also use our online platform, Moodle, anytime. We have new courses starting every month.
  • A Team to Back You: You’ll get a dedicated Employment Coach and an Employer Engagement Manager. They work together to get you ready for the workplace and connect you with companies that are hiring.
  • Practical Support: We’ll help with travel costs to the centre, giving you about £5 a day.
  • Technical Support: You will need a laptop that you can bring to the learning centre. If you don’t have a laptop, we can loan you one or an iPad.
  • Your Guaranteed Job Interview: When you finish, we will arrange a formal job interview with a local employer to help you get your foot in the door.
