Countryside Officer

The Countryside Officer will be responsible for managing the site, including leading small projects, ensuring site safety, and monitoring wildlife populations. The role requires a practical countryside skill background, ecological knowledge, and the ability to work outdoors.

Job Introduction

We have a rare opportunity to join the team managing Cannock Chase.

Most of this land is designated SSSI and SAC and is in a Higher Level Stewardship Agreement. A wealth of wildlife lives here including nightjars, small pearl bordered fritillaries, Welsh clearwing, adders, woodlarks and 8 bat species to name a few. There is fascinating history connected to the site including remains of vast WW1 training camps. Millions of visitors enjoy spending leisure time here.

Main Responsibility

In this role you will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks to manage the site.

You will:

  • Lead on small projects, including parts of the Stewardship Scheme delivery to bring the site back into favourable condition.
  • Ensure the site is in safe condition for visitors through site surveys and ensuring repair work is completed.
  • Monitor the wildlife populations, including data recording and analysis.

Achieving these work areas is carried out by a mixture of hands-on work, leading volunteers and contractor management.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have:

  • A practical countryside skill background and ecological knowledge.
  • Ability to apply health and safety and legal compliance to land management is important. You will be managing small projects and working as part of the team towards our overall goals.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weathers and adaptable to the needs of the role.

Teamwork is essential for our small team working together to look after Cannock Chase.
