Job Introduction

Help Staffordshire achieve our ambition of good health and wellbeing for all.

We’ve got a vision at Staffordshire – we want our county to be an innovative, ambitious and sustainable county, where everyone has the opportunity to prosper, be healthy and happy.

About Us: You'll be working in the Public Health Team within the Health and Care Directorate focusing on priorities including children’s public health and healthy lifestyles.

Our team provides oversight and delivery of the county’s public health responsibilities.

We provide specialist input, technical expertise, and leadership for a range of programme areas, working ‘upstream’ to prevent ill health and enable good health and wellbeing. Our focus is on reducing health inequities and achieving the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes for all of Staffordshire’s residents.

Main Responsibility

This is an opportunity to be part of our exciting programmes of work across Staffordshire.

As a Commissioning Officer you will support the Commissioning Manager in shaping and embedding public health programmes across Staffordshire. Working collaboratively with council colleagues, a wide range of partners and local communities to understand health inequalities, co-ordinate and deliver local plans and capture outcomes.

You will be passionate about promoting improvements in public health and reducing inequity and you will promote co-production to ensure the voice of the person is recognised.

There are 2 x Commissioning Officer posts available:

Post 1 - Permanent

Post 2 – 18-month fixed-term maternity cover to start August 2025 (secondments will be considered for internal applicants)

You will also work across the wider public health team.

These roles will support Commissioning Managers across the public health team. This will include two major programmes. Working collaboratively with partner organisations, including the NHS, you will help to drive forward and embed:

  • The Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent infant mortality prevention programme.
  • The Better Health Staffordshire (BHS) programme of work (a whole system, all-age approach to enabling healthy weight).

The Ideal Candidate

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is keen to develop their knowledge of public health, can understand and interpret data and how this is used to inform programme development and delivery.

We are looking for someone who has the following experience and skills:

  • Collaboration - Experience of working within partnerships and good communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Organisation - A confident and competent organiser with excellent project management skills, contributing to the development of business cases and informal/formal reports and with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Passionate - Passionate about improving public health and reducing health inequalities and be committed to community engagement and coproduction.
  • Committed - Able to work effectively as part of the team to deliver our objectives and outcomes, with a high level of personal drive and integrity, and committed to proactively solving problems and developing innovative solutions to improve outcomes.
